Could you or someone you know be encouraged by Bible verses to comfort a grieving mother? Are you or a loved one experiencing a deep season of grief and loss? The Bible speaks to that in several ways, and I pray this collection of Bible verses are words of comfort to you during this difficult time.
The Bible, God’s Word, is here for us in any circumstance, and certainly during our time of grief. It can comfort us as we grieve, often in our darkest valley. So today I’m sharing 35 Bible verses to comfort a grieving mother to comfort and encourage you in hard times.

Bible Verses to Comfort a Grieving Mother
The grief of a mother can come in various forms. Miscarriage and stillbirth are what come to my mind first. The death of a child is nothing less than tragic. Or the loss at hand may also be the death of a parent.
But grief isn’t exclusive to death. You can also grieve the loss of something you once had. In my family’s case, it came through the loss of a child’s health during a chronic diagnosis.
I talk a bit about my diagnosis in one of my very first posts on this site called “You are Seen.” And I share a bit of my mom’s struggle with the diagnosis in another post called “The Weight of Diabetes.” My dad’s side of things can be found in my book on Day 13. We all reacted a bit differently to the loss of my health and this chronic illness diagnosis, but it’s safe to say we all grieved the loss.
What are you grieving now? What tough times are you facing? Are hard days ahead? Regardless of what you face, my prayer is that you will be encouraged by these Bible verses to comfort a grieving mother because the Bible is a great way to experience the love of our dear Heavenly Father.
Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need. Hebrews 4:16
Encouragement from the Book of Psalms
King David penned many of the Psalms. He is certainly one who dealt with times of such profound sorrow and grief for a long time during his life! To read through the Psalms is to get a glimpse of God’s presence in the life of King David. He was honest and open with God in these prayers, and now the rest of mankind can now look back and read it and also be encouraged.
What’s also really nice about the Psalms is that these are actually prayers you can pray. Praying scripture is something that I think is frequently overlooked. Sometimes I feel like I have to have just the right words to pray, especially in front of others. But God has shown me that my heart is what matters more than my performance in prayer. And we can always take a broken heart to God.
We can literally pray scripture when we aren’t sure what to pray. Here are several encouraging Psalms you can pray and also meditate on.
The Perfect Bible Verse for Comfort
I think this is the perfect Bible passage for many situations. This was one I committed to memory long ago, and the Lord has brought it to mind over and over through the years. It’s Psalm 23. Let’s just read the entire chapter because it’s so good.
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever. Psalm 23 (ESV)

I lift up my eyes to the mountains—where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. The Lord will keep me from all harm—He will watch over my life; the Lord will watch over my coming and going both now and forevermore. Psalm 121:1-2, 7-8
My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Psalm 73:26

For his anger lasts only a moment, but his favor lasts a lifetime; weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning. Psalm 30:5
But you, Lord, do not be far from me. You are my strength; come quickly to help me. Psalms 22:19

Scripture to help grieving moms worship God through grief
When my seven-year-old son came home from church with us this Easter Sunday, he was so happy he was skipping. We asked what he learned in kids’ church that morning. He said, “Mama, did you know that God can make good things come out of bad things?!”
Of course, he was referring to the resurrection of Christ, being Easter Sunday. But he was so right. I have experienced this personally. Good things certainly can come out of a difficult journey. It’s why I wrote the Devotions on Diabetes book. If you want the back story, it’s here. Or you can grab a copy of the book also.
But knowing that God can bring good things out of really hard things reminds us of His unfailing love for us, and that we always have a reason to worship.

For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:38-39
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. John 14:27

The Long Term Qualities of Grief And God’s Provision
Grief isn’t something we just one day “get over.” I know from first hand experience and also through those I love that grief doesn’t go away, but it changes over time. It starts to look and feel differently in the long run.
But one thing we can hold onto whether we are just starting a grief journey or experiencing the extended grief is God’s Word. He is near to us, and we can also cling to that promise every day. We can know that we are not walking through grief alone — He is with us on this journey. He is our source of strength to go on.
God is also our source of compassion. He understands grief. He, who sent His Son to die for our sins on a cruel Roman cross, understands grief. So we can turn to Him for understanding and compassion at any time.
God also offers us peace. Philippians 4:6-7 says: “…in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” When we turn to God in prayer, He then provides us peace. And not just peace, but the peace that doesn’t make any sense in our minds because of the situation we’re in. Isn’t that beautiful?

A Prayer for the Mom who is Grieving
O Lord, I come to you today feeling heartbroken for the mom who is grieving. I feel for the mother who is dealing with hurt and loss. God, I pray You would encourage her through Your Word. You are the God of all comfort. You are the source of all healing. I pray You would send Your Holy Spirit to comfort her. Help her to see You through all the tears and questions. I pray You would use this experience she is facing to draw her nearer to You. And I pray she would feel Your presence as You also draw near to her.
I pray she would have family and friends who would comfort and encourage her during this difficult time. Send others to surround her and love her in tangible ways. And as time passes, I pray she can look back and see Your fingerprints all over this experience. Thank You, God. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
