Bible verses about God’s unconditional love can encourage, comfort, uplift, remind, and so much more. Love is at the foundation of who God is. And, quite frankly, sometimes I need to go back to the basics. I simply need to be reminded how much God loves me and how much I need God’s grace. You too?

It can be easy, especially living with a chronic illness, to slip into negative thoughts. And it can be easy to start to believe the lies of the enemy. “I’m not good enough.” “No one loves me.” But none of it is true. If you’re anything like me, you need to renew your mind in the truth over and over again.

Here we will look at more than 60 places in God’s word that show us about His steadfast love. We’ll also look at our love for Him in scripture. And we will look into our love for others as prescribed by the word of God, also.

60 Bible Verses About God’s Unconditional Love

First up on our journey today is a set of Bible verses about God’s unconditional love for us. When you really stop and think, it’s quite amazing. The Bible tells us that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us (Romans 5:8). That was God’s ultimate demonstration of love. He loves us that much!

Bible Verses About God’s Unconditional Love For Us

The Bible is packed with scripture about God’s love for His people — His children, as he calls us. And He paints that father-child picture for a reason. He is our Heavenly Father. Our Creator. Our Redeemer. And He loves those He has created and redeemed as Father God.

Let’s remind ourselves of the unstoppable, amazing, everlasting, selfless love God has for us. We’ll start in the Old Testament.

Bible Verses About God’s Love from the Old Testament

Know therefore that the Lord your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commandments. Deuteronomy 7:9

The Lord appeared to us in the past, saying: “I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness. Jeremiah 31:3

Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. Lamentations 3:22-23

“Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my covenant of peace be removed,” says the Lord, who has compassion on you. Isaiah 54:10

Verses of God’s Love from The Psalms

Let your face shine on your servant; save me in your unfailing love. Psalm 31:16

The Lord loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of his unfailing love. Psalm 33:5

Your love, Lord, reaches to the heavens, your faithfulness to the skies. Your righteousness is like the highest mountains, your justice like the great deep. You, Lord, preserve both people and animals. How priceless is your unfailing love, O God! People take refuge in the shadow of your wings. The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love. Psalm 103:8

And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us. Romans 5:5

But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Romans 8:35

For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:38-39

Scripture About God’s Love in Paul’s Letters

But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. God’s Love as Shown in the Book of 1 John

See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! 1 John 3:1

This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. 1 John 4:9-10

And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them. This is how love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment: In this world we are like Jesus. There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. 1 John 4:16-18

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16

Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me. John 17:23

But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. Titus 3:4-5

Isn’t it comforting and encouraging to read a collection of Bible verses about God’s unconditional love? It puts my soul at peace.

Let’s now flip the lens and look at our response and our love in return to God. How can we not show love to our God who shows us true love and makes a way for us back to Him? The good news of the gospel message itself is more than enough reason to show love in return. New life through Jesus is the greatest gift we could be given. What a loving Father!

Verses of Our Love for God in the Psalms

But I am like an olive tree flourishing in the house of God; I trust in God’s unfailing love for ever and ever. For what you have done I will always praise you in the presence of your faithful people. And I will hope in your name, for your name is good. Psalm 52:8-9

Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you. I will praise you as long as I live, and in your name I will lift up my hands. I will be fully satisfied as with the richest of foods; with singing lips my mouth will praise you. Psalm 63:3-5

Not to us, Lord, not to us but to your name be the glory, because of your love and faithfulness. Psalm 115:1

Bible Verses About Our Love for Others

Another perspective to take when reading Bible verses about God’s unconditional love is how we show it to others. Because God loves us, we can then share that love with others. We can live in perfect harmony with God’s people in this way because of the faithful love of the Lord.

And the Bible specifically tells us to do that. We aren’t to all just go our own way. We are to rally around each other, to comfort, encourage, and uplift each other with real love. Here are several verses to remind us of that. Then, we’ll end with some of the most famous verses on love.

Proverbs about Loving Others

A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adversity. Proverbs 17:17

Whoever pursues righteousness and love finds life, prosperity and honor. Proverbs 21:21

Verses about Loving Others in the Letters to Churches

Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. Ephesians 4:2-3

Each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband. Ephesians 5:33

No one should seek their own good, but the good of others. 1 Corinthians 10:24

Do everything in love. 1 Corinthians 16:14

Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. 1 Peter 4:8-9

For this is the message you heard from the beginning: We should love one another. 1 John 3:11

This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth. 1 John 3:16-18

he has given us this command: Anyone who loves God must also love their brother and sister. 1 John 4:21

Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. Romans 12:9-10

Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law. Romans 13:8

 If you really keep the royal law found in Scripture, “Love your neighbor as yourself,” you are doing right. James 2:8

Keep on loving one another as brothers and sisters. Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it. Hebrews 13:1-2

Scripture on Our Love for Others in the Gospels

A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another. John 13:34-35

Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them. John 14:21

My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command. John 15:12-14

But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. Luke 6:27-28

Love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Luke 6:35

An Entire Bible Chapter About Love

If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears. When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.

And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

Dear God, these are some of my favorite verses to read. Thank You for these reminders and profound truths of your genuine love for me. I couldn’t possibly earn such love, but praise You for this wonderful gift. Help me to never take it for granted. O Lord, I pray You would help me to follow Your will and Your ways for my life. Help me to walk with You to show You love and honor in return. Guide me to people who need to feel Your love. Help me to be a listening ear and open arms in difficult times. Direct me on the right time to reach out to them. Help me to be a conduit of your love to them. In Jesus’ name, amen.
