Why do We Need Bible Verses on Bravery?

I need a reminder of God’s will, His presence, and His purpose for my life to get me going. So feeling the assurance of God is a definite courage booster.
We will look today at some powerful verses in the Bible where people stood in the face of adversity and needed true courage. I’m hopeful these verses will do the same for you as you face life’s challenges. So I pray these scriptures will bring you closer to Him — the ultimate source of bravery.

How I know that Being Brave Can Be Hard
I know being brave can be hard first hand. Having diabetes for 30+ years now, I know it takes bravery.
Take, for example, a time in my early 20s. Although it’s been about two decades ago, I remember it like it was yesterday. I was relatively new to using an insulin pump, and I was changing out my medicine and tubing. It was something I needed to do every three days.
I had done it several times before, but this time was different. I got everything all set up and ready to insert it under my skin. When I pushed the button on the inserter, my new pump site went it, but I couldn’t get the needle out of my leg.
I would try to remove it from the new pump tubing, but it was excruciatingly painful. And worse yet, it wouldn’t budge. I ended up in the emergency room, and they had to remove it there. (Which was also incredibly painful.)
So three days later, it was time to change out my pump site again. I found myself terrified! I remember sitting in a chair, ready to insert the new site, and I was just shaking like a leaf. My palms were sweaty and my heart was racing. I was so afraid it would get stuck again.
I would start to push the button to insert the new tubing, and I would get so scared I just couldn’t do it. It would end up taking 30 or 40 minutes to convince myself that I needed to just do it and move on. And so, for several weeks, it was really an excruciating process.
How I Overcame My Fear
Ultimately, over time and with repeated success changing out insulin pump tubing, I realized that must have been a crazy one-off situation. And it’s never happened since. In two decades! But that experience froze me with fear for weeks. So I understand feeling paralyzed with fear and having to face your fear over and over.
Diabetes can give us these types of fears. We can be fearful of complications, low blood sugars, high blood sugars, the foods we eat, burnout, and more.
It’s like I wrote in my book on the day I titled “Battle Weary”:
The fact is the struggle is real. We will feel fatigue and burnout from trying to manage this disease well. We battle diabetes every hour of every day. It’s like a storm that never stops. But even though it’s hard, it’s a battle worth fighting — it’s a fight for life itself.
– Day 17, Devotions on Diabetes: A 30-Day Journey to Anchor Your Soul
Some days it’s just hard to manage, isn’t it? And some days are even harder yet. Maybe for you it’s something else. But it takes courage to face the day sometimes. It takes bravery. But God is our source of everything, including this.
The good news is that we don’t have to face it in our own strength. God wants to help us through our fears and anxieties and struggles. He wants us to come to Him. So let’s turn to His word for guidance.

Powerful Scriptures on Bravery from Isaiah
Let’s begin with the prophet Isaiah who spoke of bravery in the Old Testament. His reminders of truth in this collection of verses can certainly encourage us even today as we read his beautiful words.
So do not fear, for I am with you;
do not be dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you and help you;
I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
For I am the Lord your God
who takes hold of your right hand
and says to you, Do not fear;
I will help you.
“No weapon forged against you will prevail,
and you will refute every tongue that accuses you.
This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord,
and this is their vindication from me,”
declares the Lord.
Verses on Bravery in Psalms
There are so many Bible verses about courage in the Psalms. King David, who wrote many of the Psalms, wrote so beautifully and openly about his feelings and experiences. But he also praised God despite his circumstances. Here are a few scriptures to consider, starting with one of my all-time favorites, Psalm 23:
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures.
He leads me beside still waters.
He restores my soul.
He leads me in paths of righteousness
for his name’s sake.Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies;
you anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
all the days of my life,
and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord
forever.
The Lord is my light and my salvation—
whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the stronghold of my life—
of whom shall I be afraid?
Be strong, and let your heart take courage, all you who wait for the Lord!
He reached down from on high and took hold of me;
he drew me out of deep waters.
Proverbs about Bravery
The book of Proverbs is simply packed with wisdom. In fact, it’s known as the book of wisdom. So let’s take a look at a few verses there about bravery.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding;
in all your ways submit to him,
and he will make your paths straight.
The wicked flee though no one pursues,
but the righteous are as bold as a lion.
When you lie down, you will not be afraid;
when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.
More Bible Verses on Bravery in the Old Testament
We can find so many Bible verses on bravery throughout the Old Testament. We find courage on display in the stories of Moses during the exodus, Caleb’s response to seeing the promised land, Joshua and all he faced, and more. Here are just a few examples.
Be strong, and let us fight bravely for our people and the cities of our God. The Lord will do what is good in his sight.
Then Caleb silenced the people before Moses and said, “We should go up and take possession of the land, for we can certainly do it.”
The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.
Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego answered and said to the king, “O Nebuchadnezzar, we have no need to answer you in this matter. If this be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of your hand, O king. But if not, be it known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up.”
Bible Verses on Bravery in Ephesians
Let’s now move on to the New Testament and take a look at the Bible verses on bravery there. Paul’s letter to the Ephesians is a great place to look. Here, we find our instruction to put on the full armor of God to face our battles.
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication.
Bravery Verses Found in Romans
The book of Romans is also a great place to find Bible verses about bravery. How could it not be, as it was penned by the Apostle Paul? His life was full of opportunities to be brave, over and over again. So let’s take a look at a few of his bits of encouragement.
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?
For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Bible Verses on Bravery in the Gospels
The gospels (the books of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) are also great places to find encouragement. Written by the people who lived and walked with Jesus, they have recorded His words on bravery and worry and being afraid.
Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.
This might be my favorite powerful Bible verse of why we should have fear. We find this in the great commission from Jesus. And He tells us He will be with us always. Could there be a more compelling reason to not fear?
Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.
More New Testament Bravery Verses from the Apostle Paul
Finally, the Apostle Paul was a man whose life was marked by His bravery, as we have already seen above. His letters to the churches in Corinth and his letters to Timothy are great places to find encouragement when you are afraid.
Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God. For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ, so also our comfort abounds through Christ.
For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.
How have you faced days when you lack bravery? Where do you find courage when you need it most? My hope and prayer is that you will turn to the Lord and find all you need in Him.
Lord God, thank You for these examples of courage. Thank You for these verses and stories in the Bible we can read and reflect upon. Heavenly Father, I pray that You would provide me with courage and bravery in my time of need. Help me to focus on You and know You are always with me. Help me to remember, God, that You provide all I need and I can trust in You. Amen.
